A pergunta filosófica
é: Qual é o <i>objeto</i> dum movimento?</span></p>
E o movimento laboral? Ou movimento pela justiça
climática?
</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">A sensação que tenho é que estamos confortáveis.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><b>O</b><b> nosso auto-critério </b><b>parece-me</b><b>: o
objetivo dum coletivo pela justiça climática é defender a justiça
climática. </b><b>Que </b><b>confortável, não é? Sendo assim,
nunca falhamos.</b> “O que fizeste ontem?” - “Defendi uma
posição.” -
“Que bom. Podes dormir hoje à noite tranquilamente e nas próximas
noites também.”</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Isto é uma posição absolutamente idealista – e aqui uso a
palavra idealista no sentido da “Família Sagrada” (Bruno Bauer e
companhia).
</span></p>
As condições
</li></ul>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">As primeiras aqui são organizações materialistas.
</span></p>
confortáveis e são completamente </b><i><b>unaccountable</b></i>:
não prestam contas a ninguém e nunca vão prestar; nunca falham;
<br /></span>
</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoo_Kqz_qyPsirCiCNDfKRsVWNkXOO3X0WVFgwvYowf2SsaYuWcAg2ReSJQ7l11-Bky5pQ06TDAwslxdiHt70pd2bGsXgiCnkDDFb3XXBSwQX0vIMd3MDnFdcE1RcBv5fRRilGSSeGsYfDyBQ5cI0gvIloCgPnJMSkQInJvMFFbaqJQiXLbDKdDD8xNg1E/s240/Alan_Kurdi_lifeless_body.jpg" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="197" data-original-width="240" height="197" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoo_Kqz_qyPsirCiCNDfKRsVWNkXOO3X0WVFgwvYowf2SsaYuWcAg2ReSJQ7l11-Bky5pQ06TDAwslxdiHt70pd2bGsXgiCnkDDFb3XXBSwQX0vIMd3MDnFdcE1RcBv5fRRilGSSeGsYfDyBQ5cI0gvIloCgPnJMSkQInJvMFFbaqJQiXLbDKdDD8xNg1E/s1600/Alan_Kurdi_lifeless_body.jpg" width="240" /></a></span></div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Lembras-te do Alan Kurdi?
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Ele pergunta-me:
</span></p>
<p style="margin-left: 1.25cm;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Tu que sabes da crise climática e do
mundo em que vivemos. O que fazes? Estás a ganhar? Já tentaste
tudo?</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
</p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Eu respondo-lhe:
</span></p>
<p style="margin-left: 1.25cm;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Eu sensibilizei, e sensibilizo. Eu fiz
agitação e propaganda, e faço. Eu votei, e voto. Eu marchei e
manifestei-me, e continou a marchar.
</span></p>
<p style="margin-left: 1.25cm;"><span style="font-size: medium;">E não. Eu estou a perder.
</span></p>
Sabemos que precisamos do apoio e
envolvimento popular. Precisamos de disrupção para parar a
destruição (diz o António Guterres). E nós estamos a falhar.</span></p>
<p style="margin-left: 1.25cm;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Estamos a perder-te, estamos a perder
amigos, estamos a perder cidades internas à crise climática. E isto
</span></p>
<p style="margin-left: 1.25cm;"><span style="font-size: medium;">Amanhã vou fazer melhor.</span></p>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><span style="font-size: medium;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiscvfpb-DkBJ15jNtoFtJni5F1-M3hYgt93ndozfTazgOpxeEuDxG35pZ0D-k1blEQQSD0dtB_ssFFB-eBpiK_hHO7YMqP3_oyGfBNjrpdqXl1zV8nIpwk_i7YlEq5pB6MRRf8h_3R8LCgWrs6Vd74da8lLUso0qNkrg5lKcqH7geyo9MLQ6px03sJRhbt/s220/Alan_kurdi_smiling_playground.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="163" data-original-width="220" height="243" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiscvfpb-DkBJ15jNtoFtJni5F1-M3hYgt93ndozfTazgOpxeEuDxG35pZ0D-k1blEQQSD0dtB_ssFFB-eBpiK_hHO7YMqP3_oyGfBNjrpdqXl1zV8nIpwk_i7YlEq5pB6MRRf8h_3R8LCgWrs6Vd74da8lLUso0qNkrg5lKcqH7geyo9MLQ6px03sJRhbt/w328-h243/Alan_kurdi_smiling_playground.jpg" width="328" /></a></span></div><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span><p><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
</p><p>
</p>
Todas as nossas estratégias devem
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
</p>
pessoais, riscos organizacionais, riscos emocionais…</b></span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: medium;"><br /></span>
</p>
violência lenta, deliberado e coordenado.</span></p>
igualdade, justiça, democracia e liberdade, <i>temos de</i> travar esta
solidariedade, <i>temos de</i> parar a ebolição global.</span></p>
<p><span style="font-size: medium;">Tentámos tudo?</span></p>

I wake up, and I am in a meeting. Was I daydreaming? Was I just distracted? I am in a meeting room with people talking about the climate crisis. I look around. I recognize these faces. I know these people. They know me too. What’s at stake is everything, but the conversation is once again about everything else. There is talk of movement building, some implicit agreement on system change, there is mention of care and regeneration, and some references to intersectional this and that. We developed such an obscure way of intellectualism that even ourselves cannot see our denialism. Now that I am awake, I realize why I had gotten distracted in the first place. I look around. Are we connected? Are we serious? What’s the plan?<br /><br />We. Are. Not. Serious. We are fine, actually. It’s a lovely day, today. I have been thinking about in which city I should spend my retirement – you know, thirty years from now.<br /><br />I look around. There is a mirror on the other side of the room. So when I look around, I see myself too.<br /><br />We are atheist Jesus-waiters. We hope that someone else, a perfect redeemer, will come and do the thing that we know needs to be done. But we also don’t believe in that someone else. We know that no one is perfect, so no one is the redeemer, but only a redeemer is allowed to dare to do the thing.<br /><br />We are not thinking of ourselves as the president of the central bank (Che Guevara’s job for more than a year in post-revolution Cuba) as something we would do after one revolution but a little before moving on to prepare another revolution. We are not Ches or Fidels or Lenins or Stalins. We are shy about power because we are afraid of responsibility. Currently, we are just fine. Nobody holds us accountable and we can just pretend to exist. If someone asks, we have our convoluted answers: without a large working class movement,… ; without an anticolonial approach embedded into our organizing, … ; in order to avoid activist burnout, … ; while rejecting fossil fuels, we shouldn’t fall into the mistake supporting extractivist green capitalism, and therefore… . We know why we are not taking risks. We know why we don’t dare. We are sure. We are sure because we are fine. We are fine because we are sure. We are absolutely fucking disconnected.</p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKGc19wtheVJ53QMZiB5N5Hc-YghLAuwNe3_IQ66mPt_LJebiycugM8FU4mtmMkMgoL3zhoeQxeC0iXJQmE9YbBPCmXVSy98oOdrMtocT9vuN9tg98r0TdSIJnH7NiTl6tN0Ex4Mq1H7YiJBoAVDM6E4R36Uyc_AkPZIn8fAdthDjQjSdRWsdwlGT-BA/s600/pozzo%20lucky.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="438" data-original-width="600" height="468" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKGc19wtheVJ53QMZiB5N5Hc-YghLAuwNe3_IQ66mPt_LJebiycugM8FU4mtmMkMgoL3zhoeQxeC0iXJQmE9YbBPCmXVSy98oOdrMtocT9vuN9tg98r0TdSIJnH7NiTl6tN0Ex4Mq1H7YiJBoAVDM6E4R36Uyc_AkPZIn8fAdthDjQjSdRWsdwlGT-BA/w640-h468/pozzo%20lucky.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /> <p></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p></p><p>I wake up again. I am in a different meeting now. What just happened? Is this an ongoing dream? I recognize these faces too. It’s hard to understand the topic of the discussion… has to do with what the “people” value or prioritize or something. We are being realists again. Right after this talk, there will be some smart objectives and activity plans, and a division of tasks where people will check their “availabilities” and “capacities”. I can’t bear remaining awake. What are we even talking about? I close my eyes. <br /></p><p>I open my eyes. Now I am in a seminar which is conveniently labeled as a workshop. I occasionally try to genuinely comprehend what people are saying. This is one such moment. The speakers are long-time activists and organizers, they are nice and fine. The governments are sending us to 4 degree warming, they say, and the speakers have a complex, sophisticated and unreliable plan to send us to 3.95 degree warming. They are part of the lesser-evil spectrum. I look into their eyes. They look through me. I respond by looking through them. We are terrifyingly disconnected.<br /><br />There is an operational question and we are spending most of our energies to avoid looking at it. It’s like a black hole pulling us, and we are orbiting around it with tremendous effort – in vain – to run away from it. It comes closer as we get closer to it, so it becomes harder and harder to avoid it.<br /><br />There are, though, some special moments, when we are connected, and we look at it straight. It’s not about capitalism, it’s not about justice, it’s not about emissions – those are all on the event horizon, they are the visible, tangible parts of the black hole. When we look at it straight, it is an operational question that doesn’t allow for ambiguous answers. It sometimes wears a small girl’s body. Mine has Alan Kurdi’s smile, mostly. It asks: knowing everything that you know, what is your plan to keep us below 2 degrees warming? What are this week’s deliverables that are compatible with such a plan? What are in today’s to-do list according to that plan? What are your accountability procedures to keep you fucking connected to the meaning of the climate crisis?<br /><br />It is hard to keep looking. So we divert our attention after a couple of minutes top. Then, we are fine again. It’s sunny today, the rains of last week were really good for agriculture, but it was such a nuisance for biking. Did you see that bananas are ten per cent cheaper in the supermarket this week? We should get some.<br /><br /></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjLdec-sl9AX0Ipl_ffOzqmJhbXWqfK_A9Qc3gAGE0bShcBF-GyZ-XZJoQ5PsiXt3DEmxKY1J7rGODDfKjUFvnM0-sqbOT8TBdcftJpPoO757Yu7P_3CLIaWDOedjMp3a7Z7xiYKWkzsmoPhP5FeQYYyO9BOAF8hi5-SU0HhGRyroHfX3Q4nliwFg0hg/s1000/strange%20fire.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="691" data-original-width="1000" height="442" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhjLdec-sl9AX0Ipl_ffOzqmJhbXWqfK_A9Qc3gAGE0bShcBF-GyZ-XZJoQ5PsiXt3DEmxKY1J7rGODDfKjUFvnM0-sqbOT8TBdcftJpPoO757Yu7P_3CLIaWDOedjMp3a7Z7xiYKWkzsmoPhP5FeQYYyO9BOAF8hi5-SU0HhGRyroHfX3Q4nliwFg0hg/w640-h442/strange%20fire.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p><br /></p>NONEhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05842776608071571404noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-6715262385816429265.post-80911588230937858252022-12-26T15:47:00.005+03:002022-12-27T14:02:09.791+03:00Top Ten Essential (and Controversial) Hints for the Climate Organizer<p>
</p><h1 class="western"></h1>
<p>This is no clickbait.
</p>
<p>If you have been organizing for climate (that means, going to
meetings and all, beside participating in actions), then <b>you are
probably struggling not only with climate anxiety but also with a
bunch of situations and people that are making your activism harder</b>.</p>
<p>There are some ways of making your life easier, but speaking them
out is considered politically incorrect so nobody will tell you
although many people are using these tricks anyway.</p>
<p>I’ll keep each hint short and will give you a couple of readings
when necessary. (Also, I put no images that could distract you.) My working hypothesis is: at least 50% of your
organizing efforts are wasted in dealing badly with the following
issues; hence these hints will double your efficiency.</p>
<p><br />
<br />
</p>
<h3 class="western">1) Don’t worry about the traditional left.</h3>
<p>Traditional left was built under the assumption that <i>one day</i>
there would be a revolution. The Soviet Union’s tactical maneuvers
taught them to organize the masses and wait patiently. One of their
core slogans is “The struggle continues”.</p>
<p>All of this is, of course, deeply climate denialist.<br /></p>
<p>If you understand climate crisis, you will probably be taking
risks in your activism. The traditional left will tell you not to,
and will cheer when your risk goes awry. <b>They will be cynical all
along the way, because that’s their psychological response to
anything other than them.</b> Don’t listen to them. Their
organizations have neither the cognitive skills to process climate
emergency nor the adequate culture to do activism under climate
emergency.
</p>
<p>Beware: Whatever you are building on, was built by them. Show them
respect for their decades-long struggles. However, the responsibility
is also on them that they didn’t win after decades-long of trial
and error. They have to change, and they have to change quick. The
chances are they won’t.
</p>
<p><b>They don’t </b><b>feel they </b><b>have a deadline; you do.</b>
Learn to ignore them without being rude to them.
</p>
<p><br />
<br />
</p>
<h3 class="western">2) Don’t worry about the new left.</h3>
<p>Even though it had a more solid theoretical foundation in the
1960s, today the “New Left” is, for all practical purposes, all
the socialists, communists and anarchists that are not in the
traditional left. There are a few things you have to understand
about the new lefties.<br /></p>
<p>They will sound very intellectual, which they are. <b>They are
also the only significantly large social movement that didn’t have
any victories. Their talk is inconsequential.</b> Therefore it cannot
be true. You may learn from their mistakes, but don’t look up on
them by overvaluing their talk.</p>
<p>As part of their intellectualism, they will be very critical about
everything you say. In fact, they are extremely identity-oriented.
They will have loads of in-group dynamics to judge your actions and
your organizations because you are “not [blank]” / “not [blank]
enough”. That’s because they had to survive the reactionary 1990s
and they were very lonely. Their identity is their survival method.</p>
<p>As they passed through the 1990s, they are resistance-oriented.
They resisted neoliberalism, privatizations, financialization, etc.
for decades, without any offensive or revolution. They are created
under the assumption that you shouldn’t have well-thought-of
propositions for the society as a whole, because they were born when
“ideology ended.” Their core slogan, “Another world is
possible”, was in itself a statement of defeat.</p>
<p>All of this is, of course, deeply climate denialist.</p>
<p>You’ll need masses, and you’ll need to change the whole world.
You’ll have to be very tactical and also very visionary,
simultaneously.</p>
<p>They will tell you that you are not working class enough, you are
not anti-system enough, you are not queer enough, etc. <b>The point
with having a climate deadline is that being X enough is irrelevant
if we fail to stop the climate crisis.</b> Don’t listen to their
fake criticism. They just want to be comfortable.
</p>
<p>Once you are big enough, they will join you. Continue ignoring
them then, too.</p>
<p><br />
<br />
</p>
<h3 class="western">3) Get on with failure.</h3>
<p>If we won everything now (meaning: zero emissions as of today,
plus global justice, plus whatever your utopia requires),
temperatures will continue increasing probably up to 1.4ºC .
Currently, it already is 1.1ºC warmer than pre-industrial times. You
understand what that means?</p>
<p>It means that all the climate catastrophes you watch on television
and that motivate you to act, will <i>continue getting worse</i>
throughout your entire lifetime. Even an idealistic victory will look
like failure.</p>
<p>You won’t get an idealistic victory. <b>In the best-case
scenario, you will fail, fail, fail, fail, fail, then win something
that looks like a weird beast you have no idea how to feed.</b></p>
<p>Until victory, everything is a rehearsal. Get on with it. Learn
from it and move on.</p>
<p>Victory won’t look like what you imagined. It will be awesome
and disappointing. Get on with it.</p>
<p><br />
<br />
</p>
<h3 class="western">4) Green capitalism is not a real thing to worry
about.</h3>
<p>Some people are worried that we will have a transition from fossil
capitalism to green capitalism under an extractivist logic. Those
people are wrong and they are distracting you.</p>
<p><b>Green capitalism exists and will grow. But it is not replacing
and will not replace fossil capitalism.</b></p>
<p>Capitalism and fossil fuels grew from each other. The connection
between them is not accidental, it’s structural. There is no such
thing as “fossil-free capitalism”. (check Andreas Malm’s <i>Fossil
Capital</i>: <a href="https://www.versobooks.com/books/2002-fossil-capital">https://www.versobooks.com/books/2002-fossil-capital</a>
) Getting rid of fossil fuels means destruction of capital worth of
trillions of dollars. It won’t happen before climate collapse.</p>
<p>Also, it’s empirically not happening. Emissions are increasing,
so is demand for all fossil fuels. (check <i>Energy Transition or
Energy Expansion</i>, by TUED and TNI:
<a href="https://www.tni.org/en/publication/energy-transition-or-energy-expansion">https://www.tni.org/en/publication/energy-transition-or-energy-expansion</a>
).</p>
<p>Keep your eyes on fossil fuels. <b>If we stop fossil fuels,
capitalism won’t survive. If we don’t </b><b>stop </b><b>fossil
fuels, we are fucked.</b> Don’t get distracted by other
environmentalist issues. They are a strategic self-trap for you. (If
you are dealing with such a trap, my bet is that they are led by the
Traditional Left or the New Left just to tell you how you are not
perfect, without any reference frame to a possible movement victory.)</p>
<p><br />
<br />
</p>
<h3 class="western">5) Geoengineering is not happening. Don’t get
distracted by it.</h3>
<p>Geoengineering is a false solution.
</p>
<p>A boring part of the movement thinks that it’s a false solution
because it doesn’t bring justice or because it creates other
environmental problems or something. That’s not how a “false”
anything works. What they mean is that it’s a solution that they
don’t like.</p>
<p><b>Geoengineering is a false solution, because it’s false: it’s
not doing what it says it would do.</b> It’s not cutting emissions
nor reducing warming. In fact, it’s not happening.
</p>
<p>Some people are doing some experiments to deal with minor issues
(like a making sure it’s not too hot during a football match) and
they are selling it as major breakthroughs. They are lying and they
are distracting the public. <b>Their main goal is not to implement
geoengineering. Their main goal is to create confusion in public
opinion and thereby </b><b>keep the</b><b> fossil fuel </b><b>industry
untouched</b><b>.</b></p>
<p>Keep your eyes on the ball. Fossil fuels have to go, and emissions
have to go down.
</p>
<p><br />
<br />
</p>
<h3 class="western">6) Don’t talk about what others in the movement
should be doing.</h3>
<p>It’s comfortable to think that a successful radical left-green
political party leader should have implemented some climate justice
governmental program to stop climate chaos. It’s comfortable to
think that the trade unions should have been doing climate strikes.
It’s comfortable to think that the “youth” should mobilize. In
general, <b>it’s comfortable to delegate your responsibility to
someone else.</b></p>
<p><b>If it’s not about what you will do, stop talking about it. </b>
</p>
<p>Own it. If you propose something, be ready to execute it. Don’t
waste your precious time talking about what some other organization
or group should be doing. <b>Talk about what you should be doing, and
then do it.</b></p>
<p><br />
<br />
</p>
<h3 class="western">7) Don’t listen to people who talk about what
others should be doing.</h3>
<p>Lots of people will tell you that you are not perfect (duh!). That
may be because you are not vegan, you drive a car, you don’t
recycle well enough or you bought a cookie with plastic packaging.
This is their denial mechanism. Here is how it goes: “You defend
something but you are not perfect. Therefore, you cannot be right. As
a consequence, I don’t have to do activism because I am also not
perfect and I don’t believe I will ever be perfect.” Beautiful
tautology, right?
</p>
<p>Some people will tell things like “What about the USA?” or
“What about China?”. It’s the same denialist logic going on. If
someone seriously thinks we have to get the climate policies done in
the USA first, that person would already be organizing in the USA. My
bet is that they are not doing that. They are just telling you that
they don’t want the responsibility.
</p>
<p>In short, <b>people who talk about what others should be doing are
people who are emotionally uninvested in the climate crisis. You
cannot run an honest conversation with them. So don’t run it.</b></p>
<p>Keep the question simple for yourself and for them: <b>Knowing
what I know about the climate crisis, what will </b><i><b>I</b></i><b>
do?</b></p>
<p>Talk only about what you will do and what they themselves will do.</p>
<p><br />
<br />
</p>
<h3 class="western">8) Erase “This would take us an entire week…”
from your vocabulary.</h3>
<p>Every now and then, you or someone else will introduce a
discussion or an exercise by saying “This would actually take us an
entire week/day, but we will now do a quick version of that in a
couple of hours. It will ideally give us a glimpse to… blah blah
blah.”</p>
<p>I bet you: this person never actually spent an entire week playing
with that exercise. If they did, they would already know how to
prepare a useful 2-hour session without apologies.</p>
<p><b>What they are actually saying is: I don’t know how this tool
works and I didn’t do my homework to understand it.</b></p>
<p>That means they are not in condition to present that exercise to
you in an honest way. Don’t trust their words on this.</p>
<p>To be clear: I said this many many times in my life, then one day
I was like “fuck it, I’m just gonna dive into this for once.”,
and then I realized that obviously I could extract a 15-minute
exercise from a one-week-long training content. So I got all angry at
myself for hiding my own laziness under some false sense of
complexity.
</p>
<p>Now, when I want to present something I am not fully familiar
with, I say so. I tell people “Look. There is this toy I found. I
don’t know how to play with it. I just read some instructions.
Let’s play with it. Maybe we discover something together.” Don’t
pretend to be more complex than you are.</p>
<p><br />
<br />
</p>
<h3 class="western">9) Don’t use the word “intersectional”
unless you know exactly what that means.</h3>
<p>Intersectionality was introduced in the 1980s in the context of
critical race studies. <b>At least 95% of what you do on climate is
</b><i><b>not</b></i><b> intersectional.</b> Do not abuse
terminology.</p>
<p>You may mean the <i>root cause</i> of two problems is the same.
Then just name the cause. If it’s capitalism, then you are not
intersectional, you are just <i>anti-capitalist</i>. (e.g.
gentrification and the climate crisis do not “intersect”, they
are caused by financial capitalism)</p>
<p>Many people also use the word to refer to <i>simple solidarity</i>.
If you want to recognize suffering in some group of people, then say
so. Saying “Women are more affected by the climate crisis.” makes
you a <i>humanist</i>, not an intersectional activist.</p>
<p>A depressingly overwhelming majority of activists in the movement
think that intersectionality theory is equal to either of these two.
It’s not.</p>
<p>You could, in theory, do serious intersectional work by studying
the <i>specific</i> ways in which the climate crisis affects <i>specific</i>
oppressed groups and how overlapping oppressions interact with each
other in <i>non-</i><i>linear</i> ways. There is a 95% chance that
you are not doing that.</p>
<p><br />
<br />
</p>
<h3 class="western">10) If you were raised a man, own it.</h3>
<p>Two things are confusing people in organizations: First, the
allyship discourse coming from the LGBT rights movement (and
extending to other anti-oppression movements). Second, many people
are questioning their gender or their gender performance.</p>
<p>These are both wonderful. They are also creating a new set of
problems (as progress always does).</p>
<p>If you were assumed to be a man and raised as such, chances are
that you were “overpowered” throughout your childhood. You have
the confidence of a man, you are not used to being demeaned in
public, etc. I suggest you own this.</p>
<p>I was in an international climate meeting, where half of the
participants were raised as men. Half of those were questioning their
manhood, so they stated their preferred pronoun as “they” or
interchangeable. They also occupied a large chunk of the debate,
though. I was facilitating the meeting. The statistics is that
cis-men were a quarter of the room and talked for slightly more than
a quarter of the time, others were three quarters of the room
and talked for slightly more than three quarters of the time. Now the
problem is that participants who were raised as women were half of
the room but talked for less than one third of the time. This was
entirely invisible to the participants and I couldn’t do anything
about it as the meeting facilitator.</p>
<p>I suggest that you don’t blur your experience of socialization.
If you are questioning or uncomfortable with your assigned/assumed
gender as man, say that openly and ask for support. Do make sure that
it doesn’t hide gender dynamics in the group.</p>
<p><br />
<br />
</p>
<h3 class="western">End of this post:<br /></h3>
<p>There you have it. I know it’s a bit sharp-edged and I seem to
ignore subtleties and exceptions. To be honest, I don’t care. This
is not an “article”, it’s a blog post. If a tenth of what I say
is useful for you, I’ll be happy. If the rest sounds like bullshit,
oh well, the internet is full of that, get on with it.</p>
<p>Here’s my guess:
</p>
<ul><li><p>You spend 20% of your activist time worrying about what the
traditional left said, what to do with green capitalism or
geoengineering and what others should be doing.
</p>
</li><li><p>You spend 33% of your meeting time worrying about the new
left criticism, intersectionality stuff, how long a certain exercise
would “actually” take, and men.</p>
</li><li><p>You spend 20% of your organizing time worrying about
uninvested people who talk about others, the new left activists, and
men.</p>
</li><li><p>You spend 35% of your life worrying about failure.</p>
</li></ul>
<p>Follow my advice, and you’ll be able to focus on your work and
save up to 50% of your valuable time.</p><p> </p><p></p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4pkURMm0uWFY_7yzq4hgHuirNsTnLDYT18a8yemFUMFYktHQaCxlSbkXj16G6-3wsasQVaiUbedrKDu97B40Q74i_A9l7AhfWqakt367TMzFOtm5i5QFbPd6Yd9rqgFe2QlGbSVVlbp2ElVFLNcidbmRgjWt5jCFu1EjFAecObq-DI5Wk5QgekCCkDA/s640/doctor%20advice.jpeg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="485" data-original-width="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh4pkURMm0uWFY_7yzq4hgHuirNsTnLDYT18a8yemFUMFYktHQaCxlSbkXj16G6-3wsasQVaiUbedrKDu97B40Q74i_A9l7AhfWqakt367TMzFOtm5i5QFbPd6Yd9rqgFe2QlGbSVVlbp2ElVFLNcidbmRgjWt5jCFu1EjFAecObq-DI5Wk5QgekCCkDA/s16000/doctor%20advice.jpeg" /></a></div><br /> <p></p>

<h2 class="western">I am scared.</h2>
<p align="justify"><br />
<span style="font-size: medium;">I am scared
of heatwaves. I am scared of the heatwaves of today and of the
heatwaves to come. I am afraid of not being able to sleep, of
mosquitoes, of melting electricity cables.</span>
</p><p align="justify"><span style="font-size: medium;">I am scared
of forest fires. Beside destroying entire villages and burning trees,
animals and the soil, forest fires roast human beings. Those people
that are roasted are someone’s mother, someone’s nephew,
someone’s friend from primary school.</span></p>
<p align="justify"><br />
<br />
</p>
<h2 class="western">I am scared of climate migration.</h2>
<p align="justify"><br />
</p>
<p align="justify"><span style="font-size: medium;">I am scared
of climate migration. </span></p><p align="justify"><span style="font-size: medium;">Look at Afghanistan’s chronic droughts. How
the US occupation and their collaborator governments ignored it, and
how the rural populations were abandoned during decades. Look at
where that took the country, and look at how the US sanctions will
take it forwards.</span></p><p align="justify"><span style="font-size: medium;">Look at Syria. A drought that started in 2005
reached its peak in 2007, when all the farmers lost their harvest.
The drought continued intensifying. In 2008, they lost their seeds.
In 2009, they lost the soil. In 2010, urban areas were flooded by
domestic migrants. In 2011, the Syrian uprising started due to
housing and food prices. In a couple of years, the country was filled
with invited foreign armies, uninvited foreign armies, paid recruits
of CIA, paid recruits of the Pentagon, paid recruits of the Turkish
foreign ministry, and to top it all the Islamic State. </span></p><p align="justify"><span style="font-size: medium;">Many people in
Afghanistan and in Syria left their homes in search of a better life.</span></p>
<p align="justify"><span style="font-size: medium;">Such
coherent stories of the climate collapse are rare. Reality is
convoluted. </span></p><p align="justify"><span style="font-size: medium;">In Southeast Asia, it’s mostly the floods driving the
migration. In Africa, it’s the droughts combined with the violence
of the private armies of colonialism protecting the fossil fuel
industry. In South America, droughts are accompanied by the
paramilitary structure of the extractive industries. In Yemen and
Palestine, the story is one of pure evil.</span></p>
<p align="justify"><span style="font-size: medium;">In all
these places, people fight. They fight for their rights and for
freedom. Look at Myanmar. Look at Sudan. Look at Chile. Look at Sri
Lanka. People die fighting in the streets.</span></p>
<p align="justify"><span style="font-size: medium;">In all
these places, some leave – as engineers in Portugal do or as in
medical doctors in Turkey do – in search of a better life
elsewhere.</span></p>
<p align="justify"><span style="font-size: medium;">I am scared
of climate migration. And the climate migrants are scared too. There
is generally a language barrier. There is incomprehensible
bureaucracy to integrate into. There are precarious conditions at
work, if any.</span></p>
<p align="justify"><span style="font-size: medium;">The left
has been ignoring the fear at the receiving end of climate migration.
That’s a dead end. Migrants end up in a lower income stratum than
their country of origin, which frustrates them. They are available to
live below the socially accepted poverty line, which frustrates the
poor. Many migrants are men, so they are self-entitled to women’s
bodies (as are the men in the receiving country). This is not about
whether migrants, “they”, are better or worse than “us”. A
massive increase of the lowest strata of a society means increase in
crime, conflict and unrest. That’s what poverty and inequality does
to any society. This is not to say anybody should refuse or deport
migrants. But we have to stop ridiculing the fear. The fear is real,
well-founded and rational. We need that fear to fight the climate
crisis.</span></p>
<p align="justify"><br />
<br />
</p>
<h2 class="western">I am anxious.</h2><p align="justify">
<br />
</p>
<p align="justify"><span style="font-size: medium;">People ask
me what my vision is. What kind of new society do I imagine. I
struggle with that question.</span></p>
<p align="justify"><span style="font-size: medium;">I answer:
Peace. My so-called “vision” is being able to go to the beach and
calmly watch the waves. Or go to a park and watch the clouds. Having
a nature walk in a weekday. Preparing lunch without worrying about
the dinner. Walking on the street without being assaulted, harassed
or raped.</span></p>
<p align="justify"><span style="font-size: medium;">Our current
path is that these are our best days for generations to come.</span></p>
<p align="justify"><span style="font-size: medium;">My bet is
that we abort that path.</span></p>
<p align="justify"><span style="font-size: medium;">People ask
me about my vision. They want me talk about voluntary simplicity,
about degrowth, about connecting with the Earth, about total freedom.
It’s nice to have dreams. But my vision is not climate denialist.
We will either do zero emissions by 2030 in the Global North, or we
are fucked. Current pathways of the EU would reach net zero emissions
by 2060. That’s 38 years from now, instead of the 8 years missing
until 2030. That’s an error of 375%. I have no energy to dream of
utopias.</span></p>
<p align="justify"><br />
<br />
</p>
<h2 class="western">I am in denial.</h2>
<p align="justify"><br />
</p>
<p align="justify"><span style="font-size: medium;">I have a
vague understanding of what is at stake. The climate collapse is
beyond the cognitive capacities of our species. </span></p><p align="justify"><span style="font-size: medium;">The recent news of
floods, fires and storms are all “biblical”, in the sense that
they were so rare and so irrational for past generations that they
would produce entire religions and corresponding prophets. The only
rational explanation for such devastation was divine punishment. Now,
that’s monthly news. </span></p><p align="justify"><span style="font-size: medium;">We are not ready. Our minds refuse their
actual meaning. Our bodies cannot handle it. Our continuation of our
own business-as-usual (going to work, paying for our pension funds,
</span><span style="font-size: medium;">or some other normal
activity) is denial as cognitive adjustment. It’s natural. And it’s
also natural to reject it.</span></p>
<p align="justify"><br />
<br />
</p>
<h2 class="western"><span style="font-size: large;">Your
emotions are correct.</span></h2><p align="justify">
<br />
</p>
<p align="justify"><span style="font-size: medium;">Some</span><span style="font-size: medium;">

to tell you that your emotions are correct. We are afraid, we are
anxious, we are angry. Those emotions tell you that you are alive.
Act on those emotions, otherwise you will be consumed by them.</span></p>
<p align="justify"><span style="font-size: medium;">Your anger
tells you to draw boundaries and re-institute justice. Your fear
tells you to take action to protect yourself and those dear for you.
Your anxiety tells you to prioritize and plan. Follow those emotions.
They will take you by hand and bring you to the movement.</span></p>
<p align="justify"><br />
<br />
</p>
<h2 class="western">We need prophetic action.</h2>
<p align="justify"><span style="font-size: medium;">The
proposals of the climate movement may look ridiculous to you at
first. That’s true. We are so close to irreversible civilizational
collapse and our societies are so handcuffed by corporate power, that
we really need to change everything. We live in biblical times that
cross our cognitive limits. It’s just natural that the proposals
are also prophetic.</span></p>
<p align="justify"><br />
<br />
</p>
<h2 class="western">We need an ecofeminist communism.</h2>
<p align="justify"><span style="font-size: medium;">We need
communism, in the sense that we need to end private property of the
means of production. Capitalism is fine with gender equality, with
green economy, with legislative elections every now and then; because
it can adapt and co-opt to these. Abolishing private property of the
means of production is the ultimate taboo for the system, because it
actually threatens the core of it. Nothing less than this will save
us.</span></p>
<p align="justify"><span style="font-size: medium;">We need an
ecofeminist communism, recognizing as the revolutionary subjects all
those who don’t own the means of productions and who need to work
to live. These people confront the capitalist exploitation on a daily
basis, at the workplace, at home, in their territories.</span></p>
<p align="justify"><span style="font-size: medium;">We need an
ecofeminist communism informed by the climate deadlines. We have to
learn how to understand “socialism or barbarism”, because we have
never been this close to its literary meaning. </span></p><p align="justify"><span style="font-size: medium;">There is a slogan that
goes “The struggle continues.”, we have to fight that slogan. We
have to fight against that slogan. We have to fight against the
conformism implicit in that slogan, insisting on a state of climate
emergency.</span></p>
<p align="justify"><br />

fear with you. Put your anxiety in your pocket. Dress up your anger.</span></p>

Then I decided to look at South Korea. Here are my notes.<br /></p><h3 style="text-align: left;">The world context</h3><p>First a couple of reminders from my readings on China.<br /></p><p>Biden builds on the tension created by Trump, towards a <b>new cold war on China</b>.
The plan is not to contain but to constrain it, and then dissolve through
internal conflicts (Tibet, Taiwan, Xinjiang, Hong Kong). The US
discourse is "rules-based international order" while China insists on the
"UN-based order of sovereign states". <a href="https://monthlyreview.org/2021/07/01/the-new-cold-war-on-china/" target="_blank">*</a></p><p><b>For the US, two Koreas is better than a unified Korea</b>
because it can militarize one and put defense missile units (THAAD) in the region without neighboring China. For this, the US needs controlled tension
between the two Koreas. <a href="https://monthlyreview.org/2021/07/01/in-line-of-fire-the-korean-peninsula-in-u-s-china-strategy/" target="_blank">*</a> </p><h3 style="text-align: left;">History of South Korea</h3><p>The border between China and Korea is intact since 11th century. As Korea was under Japanese rule from 1910 until 1945, it was pulled into World War II, which then resulted in two Koreas. During the Korean war (1950-53), around 75% of all productive capacity was destroyed and around 10% of the population (2 million people) was killed. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZTpLQrV7LZE" target="_blank">*</a> <br /></p><p>South Korea is one of the few countries where "<b>catching-up development</b>" worked. With active US support and under extremely dictatorial regimes (they count a total of 6 republics, interrupted by coups <a href="https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_South_Korea" target="_blank">*</a>), the state invested in education and manufacture, and then shifted to high-value technological manufacture. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6Ro6FlHe5eQ" target="_blank">*</a> This they did by <b>direct, consistent state support to specific, family-owned conglomerates</b>, called <b>chaebols</b>.<br /></p><h3 style="text-align: left;">Economy of South Korea</h3><p>South Korea today has a population of 50 million people (compared with 25 million in North Korea). It has the <b>world's 10th largest GDP, ranks 3rd in automobile production and 1st in ship production</b>. (Seoul alone has 10 million inhabitants and is the world's 4th largest metropolitan economy.)<br /></p><p>The biggest chaebols, <b>Samsung, Hyundai, LG and SK make up more than half of the sales</b>. There are some 20 more chaebols, and they all together control two thirds of the economy. There are no small or medium-sized enterprises as chaebols do not leave space for such a thing.</p><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdbwVt-n_vXm-noeyn1PGaNWlywA7EiBRq1Bw65WGzv7-Ihw32ymIjHTIJ5zUukS8SqMtBkPaDVnRLPdBjgJSXLLKK3JjkcBLHj8bXVbOuuqeRY7ZgkA6o1109acB0I5NvOgt2NwWLjaKtzhcjp6gby6AaqiWFvhtLCK6PY19MhbsYwM4cepkHcFFVrg/s2048/seoul.jpg" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="1363" data-original-width="2048" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgdbwVt-n_vXm-noeyn1PGaNWlywA7EiBRq1Bw65WGzv7-Ihw32ymIjHTIJ5zUukS8SqMtBkPaDVnRLPdBjgJSXLLKK3JjkcBLHj8bXVbOuuqeRY7ZgkA6o1109acB0I5NvOgt2NwWLjaKtzhcjp6gby6AaqiWFvhtLCK6PY19MhbsYwM4cepkHcFFVrg/w640-h426/seoul.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><br /><p></p><p>Around 70% of university graduates apply to chaebols, which have their own entrance exams a couple of times a year, for which there are specific preparatory classes.</p><p>In courts, there is an informal "chaebol negotiation rule", which is that prison-time is commuted to probation (such as the reduction of their three-years jail-time due to massive scandals of tax evasion to five-years probation).</p><p>In short, <b>the economy is mostly chaebols, which are - for all practical purposes - untouchable</b>. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wHw7Aa7lhhw" target="_blank">*</a> <a href="https://www.peoplepower21.org/English/39340" target="_blank">*</a></p><h3 style="text-align: left;">Current social situation of South Korea</h3><p style="text-align: left;">After a center-left government under Moon, in March 2022 the <b>conservative Yoon Suk-yeol won presidential elections</b>. <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C_PVaAVMcKI">*</a> This is interpreted as a shift to a hard-line position on North Korea as well as closer ties with the US. On any discussion on any political or economic topic, it's a kind of a moo-point where all previous discussion is supposed to become irrelevant because China is so big and everything else is so insignificant in comparison.</p><p>It's a very comfortable position because it implies that people outside of the Central Committee of CCP don't have to do anything about anything, ever.</p><p>I saw this with my own eyes during a presentation on a new airport near Lisbon being built by a French multinational. We were explaining that the project was a climate suicide, and someone in the audience mentioned China. Absolutely off-topic as it was, I managed to get it: the impotence culture feeding climate denial deep into our psyche.</p><p>Similar situations happened around conversations related to the Russian invasion of Ukraine. "What about China?", I was told, as if the EU had no influence on the matter at any point.</p><p>So I decided to read a bit on the subject (a total of twenty articles). Here are my notes.</p><h3 style="text-align: left;">Basics <br /></h3><p><b>China</b>'s "market socialism" is <u>not</u> state capitalism nor Keynesian. It's an <b>extended NEP policy</b>. <a href="https://mronline.org/2021/12/07/views-on-china/" target="_blank">*</a><br /></p><p>China is transferring a greater amount of surplus-value to the core
countries than it receives from the periphery (average labor terms of
trade + balance of international labor transfer), even though it did
establish an exploitative relationship with South Asia and Africa. Therefore, <b>China is a semi-peripheral country</b>. <a href="https://monthlyreview.org/2021/07/01/china-imperialism-or-semi-periphery/" target="_blank">*</a> <br /></p><p>China identifies as Global South and takes "<b>peaceful coexistence</b>" as an ideological stance. Therefore, it will <b>not do political, social or military intervention</b> to another sovereign state (didn't even send help against ISIS). On the other hand, it does have an <b>economic hegemony plan:</b> zero-interest loans for infrastructure, credits repayable in resources, direct investment, <b>the Belt and Road Initiative</b>, and the <b>Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership</b>. <a href="https://monthlyreview.org/2021/07/01/is-china-transforming-the-world/" target="_blank">*</a> The <b>Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank</b> (AIIB), connected to the Belt and Road Initiative, is China's counter-hegemonic initiative to IMF and the World Bank. <a href="https://monthlyreview.org/2017/01/01/one-belt-one-road/" target="_blank">*</a> <br /></p><h3 style="text-align: left;">Current trends <br /></h3><p>Biden builds on the tension created by Trump, towards a <b>new cold war on China</b>.

Over 82% of its exports are raw materials, and it is 32th in exports of high-tech goods. </li><li>There is only one Russian bank in top 100 (and it ranks 66). The US accounts for 34% of global military sales, Russia 22% . forest fires swallowed entire villages, then moved on to a coal power
plant as dessert. Yet it was still either terrorist groups, or else
construction mafia opening up new areas, or else lack of airplanes,
or else some broken glass. It was never the entire planet on fire. It
was never <i>that bad</i>. Happily the news of fires were suddenly
interrupted by news of flooding from three cities, which were for a
change not due to terrorists but surely due to construction and bad
city planning and dams. 80 people died but it wasn’t a climate
crime. All of which was interrupted by a smoke coming from the forest
fires in Greece. We then moved on to Afghan refugees, or else we
could risk actually beginning to grasp the dimensions of the problem.</p>
<p align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;"> <br />
</p>
<p align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">The
best way to avoid a problem is to think about it just slightly less
than the socially accepted minimum at a given moment.</p>

<p align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">We
were born the same year. I judge we should be more or less the same

and perspective. Told me about anger and depletion. Told me about
effort and instability. Told me about loneliness and fear. In
comparison to the emotional intelligence of most of them, I have the
consciousness of an ant. So it’s an overstatement when I say I
understood what they meant.</p>

Debaixo

<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
sua cabeça enquanto dizia “<i>Not necessarily!</i>”.
espaços <i>compact</i>, <i>countably compact</i>, <i>pre-compact</i>,
<i>sequentially compact</i>, <i>limit point compact</i>,
<i>paracompact</i>, e <i>pseudo-compact</i>, como são todos
diferentes mas alguns equivalentes em certas circunstâncias.
Lembro-me de resolver muitos conflitos, simplesmente esclarecendo a
necessariamente</i>.
é preciso fazer aqui e agora.</div>

<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Tenho
realidade social e a crise climática. Na primeira frase lê-se: “Com
quem se vai fazer?” É um caderno que tem desabafos, críticas,
auto-críticas, avaliações, previsões. Uma mistura de tudo e de
nada, como todos os diários. Leio-o agora.
outra. O quarto fica coberto por réguas. As réguas agitam-se. As
réguas do presente revoltam-se contra as réguas do passado.
Levantam-se barricadas ao lado da cama. As réguas do passado usam
gás lacrimogéneo. Todos – as réguas, a cama, a matemática e eu
– começamos a chorar.
e acorda o futuro. Ela entra no quarto a gritar. Nós, paramos. Ela
Abrimos as janelas para o ar circular. O futuro apanha frio e começa
a espirrar. Ninguém sabe o que fazer a seguir. Convoca-se uma
assembleia. A matemática e o futuro boicotam. Não há ordem de
trabalhos. Ninguém facilita. Tudo fica cada vez mais difícil. Fecho
o diário.</div>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Inspiro.
Espero. Expiro. O que falta é só tudo.</div>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Vou
balcão e a cozinha inteira.
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
O
pessoalmente?</div>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
<br /></div>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0cm;">
Significa
as minhas amigas e toda minha família e todas as réguas e a cama e
reavaliar todas as prioridades. Em outras palavras, significa
procurar a coragem dentro do susto. Em outras palavras, significa
imaginação ao poder.</div>

In the previous lectures, I introduced and analyzed "<i>Pois</i>", "<i>Depende.</i>" and "<i>Já agora</i>". I demonstrated how <a href="https://pretendexistent.blogspot.com/2019/04/the-entire-portuguese-culture-reduced.html">Pois</a> lets you dodge all opinion-based questions and how <a href="https://pretendexistent.blogspot.com/2019/04/ep2-reducing-entire-portuguese-culture.html">Depende.</a> allows you to dodge fact-based questions, then went on to explain how <a href="https://pretendexistent.blogspot.com/2019/05/ep3-reducing-entire-portuguese-culture.html">Já agora</a> puts you in pro-active position even though you might have limited language skills.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In this lecture, we will study a much more delicate situation about social interactions. The claim is that once the pupil understands this last concept, they can consider themselves sufficiently integrated to the Portuguese culture.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As a warm-up exercise, I invite you to consider the following situation.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
You and a friend agree to meet up on Thursday at 9pm. It's 8.30pm, you may be already at the meeting place or perhaps on your way. You receive a message from your friend saying they won't come. How would that message look like?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
On one end of the spectrum, you have northern European cultures, where such a thing would virtually never happen. On the other end of the spectrum, you have maybe something like North African cultures where you wouldn't receive any message - you would probably be quite late as well anyway. These extreme examples are not useful for our purposes. Try to think of more similar cultures.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
One option is that informing by a message can be rude, so your friend would have to call you to explain their situation.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Another option is that the message would describe the excuse.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In Portugal and only in Portugal, "<i>Surgiu um imprevisto</i>" is considered a sufficient explanation.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<h4 style="text-align: justify;">
4. "Surgiu um imprevisto"</h4>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I would translate "<i>Surgiu um imprevisto</i>" as "Something came up". </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In Portugal, your friend would say "Something came up. I won't be able to make it to our meeting today.". (<i>Surgiu um imprevisto, não vou poder ir hoje</i>.)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In any other culture I am familiar with, this is the rudest possible way. I myself receive messages like this on a monthly basis. In my first few years, this was a serious concern for me: What did I do wrong? Why do these people don't give a shit about me? I am not such a bad person to discard by a message like this... What is wrong with me?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Think about the cultural shock: I am from Turkey. When you skip a meetup, you would set up an entire story as an excuse. I recall my friends explaining their mother's medical complications in detail and their friends' messed up emotional lives to me, because those were the excuses why they couldn't make it to our meetup.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In Portugal, no one cares. "Something came up." A thing. I don't have to tell you what it is. I don't have to justify anything to you. I am not coming to our meet up. Fuck you.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
To be fair, you can also interpret this as a chilled-out culture where people are tolerant and understanding towards each other. In fact, it is really civilized <i>not</i> to ask what's wrong, and let the other person decide if and when they would be ready to tell about their problem. It is also a manifestation of a reserved culture.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Then I started testing this. And I verified that people do not trust you less because you <i>surgiu um imprevisto</i> them. It really is acceptable.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It is acceptable when you miss out a meeting, when you are late, when you fail a deadline, when you skip a task - basically, whenever you fail other people's expectations.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<h4 style="text-align: justify;">
How the four expressions build up</h4>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The four expressions identified in this online course allow you to slide and flow through all kinds of day-to-day social interactions. They also allow you to deeply grasp how Portuguese people surf through their daily lives.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Look at these expressions carefully, and you will realize that key characteristics of the Portuguese culture are indeed deducible from them.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
We already mentioned calm, peaceful, tolerant. subtle and reserved throughout the lectures. Now if you check travel guidebooks or online articles on Portuguese cultures, these are the keywords you will keep on encountering. And they are all concepts complex yet reducible to four expressions.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijfHDGXk3up_74AXobBoDyuMaZwfqvyl-tPJQdVWAm018dmjXeQTEzInUuwj7X4VYe5AX_7FhFBawtwhngUTnEE8e3Fn5ME3QUmFo0dv3DiM7jnpY3K_J1ZwWX-um50DjdLaVfs08qoKGJ/s1600/something.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="294" data-original-width="420" height="280" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijfHDGXk3up_74AXobBoDyuMaZwfqvyl-tPJQdVWAm018dmjXeQTEzInUuwj7X4VYe5AX_7FhFBawtwhngUTnEE8e3Fn5ME3QUmFo0dv3DiM7jnpY3K_J1ZwWX-um50DjdLaVfs08qoKGJ/s400/something.png" width="400" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<h4 style="text-align: justify;">
Project Finale</h4>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
You may now be expecting a fifth expression.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There is none.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
My claim is that if you fully comprehend the four expressions, you have it all figured out. You don't need any other expression.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
However, as any other serious scientist would also do, I would apply methodological skepticism in this study, and leave a margin of error.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The margin of error would be the fifth expression. I analyzed and demonstrated how four expressions can explain the entire Portuguese culture. I myself fail to find a social situation that may not be reduced to these four expressions. I have been asking around, and other people also failed. But from a perspective of rigor, I would not publicize the results of this study as "4 expressions" but instead as "5 expressions", so as to allow for an eventual correction to the theory.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Therefore, we are finalizing this project with this article.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I hope you enjoyed the project. If you got triggered or offended, I would be proud of myself. (Any serious scientific revolution is expected to cause some discomfort after all.)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Finally, if you disagree with this reduction process, I challenge you to come up with a social situation that cannot be reduced to these cases. You can further suggest the fifth expression that would complement the theory.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>

In the <a href="https://pretendexistent.blogspot.com/2019/04/the-entire-portuguese-culture-reduced.html">previous</a> <a href="https://pretendexistent.blogspot.com/2019/04/ep2-reducing-entire-portuguese-culture.html">lectures</a>, I covered the two Portuguese expressions that can guide my pupils through at least three quarters of the daily life situations in Portugal.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In this lecture, I will introduce another expression, which will take you to an advanced level of social interactions. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">
3. "Já agora" </h3>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This may come a little surprising to people who know the language, but what do I care? It was also surprising to you when I said I would reduce the entire Portuguese culture into five expressions.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I can hear your objections already. <i>Já agora</i> translates to <i>by the way</i>, which is a very common expression in virtually all languages. So why highlight it as an authentically Portuguese phenomenon? I will teach you now.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
First of all, in all cultures I am familiar with (which are quite a few, although a tiny minority in the world), the usage of <i>by the way</i> is allowed only after you finish a line of thought. If you are telling a story, you are expected to first finish your story and only then add a side note with a <i>by the way</i>; if you are having a conversation, you are expected to first respond to the question at hand and only then add a new subject.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuT5Wm_1Q9glu3mSZDqgcBciGTPmOM68PPw4C5oRrXSKgxchKM1wwYbtJnvdZBYiW5hdgd6QdEVs4aKsy7KtO8raRci6AzLRMENtKVhvGIsY930ynq1gbd6G-egE6i7gxTRs5DGTjN8cOi/s1600/and-now-for-something-completely-different.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="700" data-original-width="494" height="320" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjuT5Wm_1Q9glu3mSZDqgcBciGTPmOM68PPw4C5oRrXSKgxchKM1wwYbtJnvdZBYiW5hdgd6QdEVs4aKsy7KtO8raRci6AzLRMENtKVhvGIsY930ynq1gbd6G-egE6i7gxTRs5DGTjN8cOi/s320/and-now-for-something-completely-different.jpg" width="225" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
What is original is that in Portugal you can start an email with <i>já agora</i>. People who have been in active mailing lists can testify for this phenomenon: There is an email thread about a collaborative text, then someone goes "<i>Já agora</i>, how did the meeting with the artists go?". <i>And everyone replies!</i> Which says that this is socially acceptable way of introducing an irrelevant subject.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Better still, you can interrupt a real life conversation among friends with <i>já agora</i> and just talk about whatever you wanted to talk about.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
For the first few years, when this happened, I would start laughing out loud because I was reminded of the "And now for something completely different" in Monty Python's Flying Circus.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Then, I got used to it.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<h4 class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Upgrading your social skills</h4>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Now that we established its social license, let us analyze why <i>Já agora</i> is so important in Portugal?</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Because it upgrades your social skills from passive to active, from defensive to offensive.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
Imagine the following situation: You speak little Portuguese. You are with some friends and you want to tell a story. You understand absolutely nothing of what they are talking about, but using <i>Pois</i> and <i>Depende.</i> you are capable of dodging opinion-based as well as fact-based questions. (See previous lectures.) But besides accompanying the conversation, you really want to tell what happened at the dinner party the other night.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
In any other country, you would have to wait for the conversation to end with an explicit silent moment (unless you understand the subject and find a way of smoothly shifting the focus). In Portugal, you only need <i>já agora</i>. Insert <i>já agora</i> at any point, and voila! You magically created a socially legitimate context to start telling your story. </div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
To sum up: If you grasp the scope and functionality of <i>já agora</i> fully and correctly, you can be proactive - in addition to the more defensive strategies of <i>depende.</i> and <i>pois</i>.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
If you want to "be a local", I highly recommend the "<i>Pois. [pause 1 second] Já agora.</i>" combination, where you not only introduce your topic out of nowhere but also acknowledge everything that was said before.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
At the test period of this project, I personally tested the power of <i>já agora</i> in various situations. To name a few, it worked in a family dinner, during a chat with friends, in an official meeting, at the public administration office, and in the health center. I was giving a talk on climate science and I literally jumped from topic to topic using <i>já agora</i> twice. Later I asked for feedback from the audience and people thought that my presentation was coherent.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
I strongly recommend the class to practice it wisely. <i>Já agora</i> is not equal to <i>by the way</i>. It is much more subtle and has much more cultural functions. An overdose may harm your social relations.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">
To conclude, we now have three expressions that not only cover an overwhelming majority of all social interactions but also give you defensive as well as offensive tools of conversation. In the next lesson, we will enter into more delicate situations.</div>
<div class="" style="clear: both; text-align: justify;">

<a href="https://pretendexistent.blogspot.com/2019/04/the-entire-portuguese-culture-reduced.html">Last week</a>, I introduced my personal project of reducing the entire Portuguese daily-life interactions into five basic expressions. I also introduced the first of these expressions, <i>pois</i>, and explained its wide and encompassing use. I finished by saying that "most of Portuguese social life, around 50% of all the essentials, is just understanding and using <i>pois</i>. The rest is all optional."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In this lecture I would like to introduce another very important Portuguese phenomenon.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">
2. "<i>Depende</i>."</h3>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
While sometimes used in a slightly longer form ("<i>Isso depende.</i>"), this sentence, directly and easily translatable to "It depends." or "Depends." has one uniquely Portuguese aspect:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It has a period at the end.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
You ask a simple, straightforward question to a Portuguese person. Let's think. Something like: "Would you like to go to the movies?" or "Wanna go to this bar?" or "What are your holiday plans?" or "How much would a university graduate earn in Lisbon?". Then you get an answer:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
"It depends."</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And this bizarre non-answer is socially acceptable.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Depends on <i>what</i>? If it depends on X or Y, <i>how</i> does it depend on them?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The Portuguese person cannot be bothered with such technicalities. It depends. Period.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Now, if you actually wanted an answer, the Portuguese person will not let you get it so quickly. I had a real-life example which at first was a bit annoying but it slowly turned outright hilarious.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Me getting a ride from a friend</i>: How long do you think we take to get there?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Friend</i>: It depends.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Me</i>: ??</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Friend</i>: ...</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Me</i>: Depends on what?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Friend</i>: <i>Pois olha</i>, if there is traffic, we may take quite a while. If the roads are empty, we would be pretty quick. With this rain, there may also be an accident.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Me</i>: ????</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Friend</i>: ...</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Me</i>: Yeah okay, but that's all obvious. I actually need to know this to plan the rest of my day.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Friend: Pois</i>.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Me</i>: ????!!!!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Friend</i>: ...</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Me</i>: I mean, if there is traffic, will be take, like, seven hours?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Friend</i>: NO! <i>Que disparate</i>! We would never take that long.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Me</i>: So, how long at most? Five hours?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Friend</i>: <i>Pá</i>, if there is an accident the whole can take four hours.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Me</i>: Great. Now, if the roads are all empty, how long to we take? One hour?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Friend</i>: NO! There's no way we can get there in an hour.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Me</i>: OK, so... two hours? (trying not to laugh out loud)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Friend</i>: Once I did this trip at night, with no cars, it took me like two-and-a-half hours, maybe a bit more.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Me</i>: Wonderful. Thanks, let me text my friends.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
True story.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
What's the moral here?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As you may remember, <i>Pois</i> acts as a void answer that may mean affirmation, rejection, neither or both. (See <a href="https://pretendexistent.blogspot.com/2019/04/the-entire-portuguese-culture-reduced.html">previous lecture</a>.) It allows you to avoid giving any <i>opinion</i> in a socially acceptable way.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Depende</i>. (always with a dot throughout these lecture notes), on the other hand, allows you to avoid giving <i>factual information</i> in a socially acceptable way.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
And I am serious: Portuguese people actually take "<i>Depende</i>." as a full answer and move on to a different subject without hesitation. It really is socially acceptable.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So if you want to get information, you really have to be persistent and patient. But if you don't want to get information or you simply don't want to think about the question, you can just randomly shoot "<i>Isso depende.</i>" and you are juuuuust fine.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
When I noticed the power of "<i>Depende.</i>", I was astonished. Initially, I used to think "They just don't care! And they are okay with each other not caring!"; but then I realized something else:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<h4 style="text-align: justify;">
Application of reduction</h4>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
You may have heard that Portuguese people are always very calm and peaceful. They even made an armed revolution without using the arms! It is true that Portuguese culture is probably one of the most peaceful and chilled cultures in the world.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But how does it work? How come the Portuguese are always so calm? (Just next door, Spanish are so not famous for calmness.)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The equation "<i>Pois</i> + <i>Depende.</i>" is your answer.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The entire culture allows you to not give a shit about neither opinions nor facts! You can dodge literally anything that can give you the slightest discomfort. Voila! The calmness is a linear combination of <i>Pois</i> and <i>Depende.</i> .</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Thereby, we solved one of the long-lasting mysteries of the Portuguese culture by the rigorous application of only two expressions.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In my next lecture, I will address some of the remaining aspects of the Portuguese daily-life, although I should warn you: very little cultural content is left that is not covered by these two expressions.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHQXSXd8eeouc_Ge6Q0od47i3rLcLCqvKFukSssCummj4bKG-Le1eeUydJQRUVa5WD5CTKuT_EGpfXGeSyRV2DwKO3kw0CEIskzOnha5tBzXnT8rzl6MzbDOJMaLr-2bd4i-aSmm0bNNTX/s1600/lisbon2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" data-original-height="660" data-original-width="990" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgHQXSXd8eeouc_Ge6Q0od47i3rLcLCqvKFukSssCummj4bKG-Le1eeUydJQRUVa5WD5CTKuT_EGpfXGeSyRV2DwKO3kw0CEIskzOnha5tBzXnT8rzl6MzbDOJMaLr-2bd4i-aSmm0bNNTX/s640/lisbon2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>

In today's lecture, I would like to introduce the five expressions that can explain the entire Portuguese culture.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
With these five expressions, you can comprehend and engage in all kinds of day-to-day social interactions. Many Portuguese people are not aware of the power and scope of these expressions, although they do admit their common use. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">
1. "Pois."</h3>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is a lifesaver. It is somewhere around "right!", "right?", "well..." and "well?". It is neither of them and it is all of them. (It can also be used as "because".)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But besides its meaning, it has one power that no other expression in any language has: Lets the conversation flow no matter what. Here's how:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
When you are a foreigner and you are talking about a sophisticated subject or interacting with a child or an elderly, sometimes you don't understand what is being said. In such cases, unless it is important, it is generally considered kind to just nod, smile or say something like "yeah", "right", etc. None of this works if the speaker poses a Yes/No question. You cannot nod, you cannot smile, you cannot say "yes" until understanding the question. But you can <i>always</i> say "Pois.", and the speaker will continue with his/her story.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It's like a <i>void affirmation</i>.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In my first few years in Portugal, I was very reluctant to engage in conversations with strangers because of my lack of language skills. Then I discovered the power of <i>pois</i>. I still had extremely limited vocabulary, a messy and improvised grammar, and extremely narrow experience in listening, but I had <i>pois</i>! I managed having full conversations with the locals in the south, in the interior, in the north, in cities, in villages, everywhere... Yes, I admit that I understood maybe a third of what that <i>alentejana</i> old lady told me, but she doesn't know that! And I did understand the essential: her children living abroad and visiting only very seldom. I didn't catch their profession, their ages, etc. but who cares: it was just a chitchat in a <i>pastelaria</i> where we had a coffee in passing. I didn't have to constantly stop her speech to ask for repetition. It was a pleasant moment for both of us.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But this is just the beginning. Here is an opposite situation:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>(Me in Social Security office asking for a document)</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Me:</i> So, I need this number to enroll to my university.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Lady in the counter:</i> Well but you need to bring us your income proof first.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Me:</i> My income will be a scholarship. I will take care of that right after enrolling to the university.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Lady in the counter:</i> Okay but we need the income document to give you the Social Security number.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Me:</i> ??</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Lady in the counter:</i> ...</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Me:</i> But I cannot get the scholarship without enrolling to a university, and I cannot enroll without this number. So I need the number to get my income.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Lady in the counter</i>: <i>Pois</i>.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
If this looks surreal, you can confirm with your Portuguese friends... even better if you talk to immigrants in Portugal. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Please read the above dialogue carefully: this is a <i>void denial</i>.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
So the same word can work for answering anything, to the extent that you can evade a Yes/No question by simply affirming the speaker's point, as well as not answering anything, to the extent that you can evade a direct, objective question. The same word is for void affirmation <i>and</i> for void denial.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<i>Pois</i> is so void that it fits everywhere and resolves everything.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I told my Portuguese friends about this multi-functionality and they all responded: <i>Pois!</i></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
When I started this "personal project"
of reducing the Portuguese culture into five expression, the real
challenge was: what in the Portuguese culture is <i>not</i> covered by <i>pois</i>? What social situation may not be explained by <i>pois</i>? So my problem was not to get enough expressions to cover all the situations, but to look for situations that are <i>not</i> covered by <i>pois</i>. I found a few, but I should admit: most of Portuguese social life, around 50% of all the essentials, is just understanding and using <i>pois</i>. The rest is all optional.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Next time, I will tell you the second expression.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<b>§1.</b> In a #MeToo case, Ronaldo is accused of rape and having paid $375k to buy silence on the issue. This will test the social power the feminist movement had gathered until now on <i>all</i> subjects, and how it is articulated will determine its power in <i>all</i> subjects.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>§2.</b> In daily life, feminism <i>can</i> have single-issue fights. We can have a victory for equal pay, while losing in the catcalling front. We can be winning in #metoo while at the same time losing in the femicide front. We can gain more legitimacy on reproductive work, while losing on objectification of women's bodies.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Of course all these are connected and that's why feminism is a word, but the struggles can be separated tactically: you can convince your friend that the recent court case about rape is outrageous, while failing to persuade him about salary inequality. You can get more and more public support on stupid ads objectifying women, but people can still be skeptical about whether praxe is sexist. These fights are connected but separate.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>§3.</b> This is not the case with Ronaldo's scandal. Ronaldo is a test to the Portuguese population as a whole.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The reason for this is that <b>Ronaldo represents the ultimate social consensus in Portugal.</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>This is not a single issue. This is <i>the</i> issue.</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>§4.</b> Now, <b>all feminist struggles and collectives are being tested politically</b>. How the society as a whole responds to the case is a <i>direct indicator</i> of the social power all the feminist movement built so far.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
There are very few historical opportunities where a whole movement crystallizes (temporarily, of course) into one singular question.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>§5.</b> And, there is the other side of the coin:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>How the feminist movement as a whole deals with the Ronaldo case and how it stands after this battle (more powerful or less powerful), will have a <i>direct impact</i> on the future of all feminist struggles</b>, from equal pay to sexual harassment, to violence against women. If the power balance gets against feminist discourse in this particular discussion, then the power balance in all the fights will weaken. If it gets for the feminist discourse, it will empower all the fight.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This is because the feminist movement is confronting the social consensus <i>as a whole</i> with Ronaldo's case.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The case is not just an indicator of the past, but also a defining moment of the future.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<b>§6.</b> <b>There are key moments in a war where the future of all the fronts is represented by and depends on a single battle.</b></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
#MeToo movement generated such a wonderful opportunity in Portugal.</div>

- Na

<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Telefon elinde, tuvalete gitti. Sinirle mesaja tekrar baktı: Sent 4:21. İnsan gece geç saate kadar sürteceğini sabaha karşı mı fark eder? Facebook. Saat 1:47'de selfie koymayı bilmişsin bak. Neyse, en azından saat dört buçukta bana <i>eve</i> gittiğini söylemeyi akıl edecek kadar ayıkmışsın: Eve dönüyorum. Hala dışarıdayım değil. Dönüyorum değil. Eve dönüyorum. Eve gidiyorum da değil. Gecenin bittiğini, sabah yalnız uyanacağını ima eden küçük seçimler gizli sözcüklerinde. İçimi rahatlatmak gelmiş aklına sabahın dördünde. Bu da bir şeydir. Sifonun düğmesine bastı.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Mutfağa gitti. Akşamdan kalan iki tencere, içleri su dolu. Şimdi yıkamak kolay olur. Önce bulaşıklığı boşaltmaya başladı. Biraz yer açılır gibi olunca mutfağın kapısını çekti. Suyu açtı. Gitti bulaşık eldivenlerini geçirdi ellerine. Teki sarı, diğer teki pembe. Geldiğinde su ısınmıştı bile. Hızla yıkadı tencereleri. Dikkatle durulamaya başladı. Ydi barik. Yeni boşalmış reçel kavanozu çarptı gözüne. Hazır elim değmişken. Önce fırçayla reçel kalıntılarını temizledi, sonra deterjan. Kara fırtın. Kavanoz durulamak karışık iş. Her yanı cam olduğundan, her bir deterjan köpükçüğü rahatça fark edilir. Orayı sudan geçireyim derken eldivenin bir köşesinde kalmış başka bir beyaz köpük zıplar kavanoza. Aniden musluğu kapattı. İki saniye süren sessizlik. Ardından: Haydi barikata, haydi... Alarm! Telefon? Tuvalette. Koştu.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

İnsan uyanınca kendiliğinden iptal olan erteleme özelliği icat edemediler. Çok zor olmasa gerek. Herhalde uykumda like etmedim Arjantinli çiftçilerin eylem haberindeki fotoğrafları. Telefonun bunu tespit edip uyandığım sonucuna varması teknik açıdan kolay olmalı. Bu özelliği opsiyonel de yapabilirler. Ya da bir application olarak mesela. Umarım evdekileri uyandırmamışımdır. Eldivenin tekini çıkardı. Tuvalet kağıdıyla ekrandaki su damlacıklarını sildi. Telefon cebinde mutfağa döndü. Artık eldivene lüzum yok. Astı eldivenleri bir sandalyenin arkasına. Suları süzülsün. Kavanozu son bir kez sudan geçirdi. Olduğu kadar.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Bazen diyorum eleştirilen her cümleyi çıkar öyle yolla.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Gerçi şimdi çat diye sınırlamış oldu her şeyi, yedide büroya uğramam lazım. Onu yarına atabilir miyim ki acaba?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

Durdu. Offf! Geri dönsem şimdi yarım saat kalkmam bilgisayarın başından. Saat? Daha 11 buçuk.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Derin bir nefes aldı. Yürümeye devam etti. Ev arkadaşlarına mesaj attı: Günaydın! :) Ben saskinligimdan duzelttigm dosyayi yollamayi unutp ciktim. Masa ustundeki doc.u gruba yollar msn?
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Durakta, gelen ilk otobüse bindi. Di-duut.
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Köprüye geldiklerine okumaya ara verdi. Esasında çok güzel bir şehir olabilirmiş burası. Yazık. Sarayburnu'ndan geçen vapurlara baktı. Aslında, niye acele ettiysem. Madem zamanım vardı, vapurla sakin sakin geçebilirdim gayet. İnsan telaş etmeye de alışıyor.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Telefonuna göz attı. Yeni mesaj yok. Bahse girerim saat 3'ten önce gelmez. Kiminle giriyorsam bahse...</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Nesrin'in yaptığı gibi Facebook'tan falan çıksam? Her an birbirimizi yüklüyoruz olumsuz haber ve yorumlarla.
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Kitabına döndü. Bir kolunu kapı ağzındaki direğin etrafından geçirdi. Dengesini sağlayacak şekilde bacaklarını araladı. Üç dakika ve üç sayfa sonra, metrobüs sallandı, gözlerini sayfalardan kaldırırken aracın sarsıntısıyla tutunduğu direğe başını çarptı. Metrobüs yoldan çıktı, karşıdan gelen araca çarptı. 4 ölü, 20'si ağır 67 yaralı.</div>

I missed two revolutions, and I am only turning 30.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I know that for many people, this is not how the story is told. But, together with climate urgency, it explains some of my frustrations.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In this text, when I say revolution, I will simply mean a radical progressive change pushed from below, which was impossible to achieve by stretching the existing institutions and which, just before they happened, would be considered impossible by large sections of the population. (So no socialism required here.)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">
Portugal</h3>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
First it was the anti-austerity movement between 2011 and 2013 in Portugal. These were years of constant spontaneous actions and organizing, together with activation and radicalisation of existing organizations. In its peak, it mobilized more than one million people to the streets in a single march.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1smqrCP0GcaUZQ09dYv_kjsxRfbom8880JsA4-sP6XV1dyT4mYgxrHCGlYvCsQjLxvqDYlq2zjjl_xV6fQT5n9ilv8_n-U_4jNe2WGFi1Fjf2QwMroZQrfHxkCSd8qX48YAWAlvTeAIpn/s1600/portugal+2mar.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="213" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh1smqrCP0GcaUZQ09dYv_kjsxRfbom8880JsA4-sP6XV1dyT4mYgxrHCGlYvCsQjLxvqDYlq2zjjl_xV6fQT5n9ilv8_n-U_4jNe2WGFi1Fjf2QwMroZQrfHxkCSd8qX48YAWAlvTeAIpn/s320/portugal+2mar.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
In perspective, 1 million people make up 10% of Portuguese population. Back then, my language skills were limited, and I wasn't expecting something as big. Right after the protest I went home and checked: I did not encounter any other mobilization that put more than 10% of the society to the streets. This was most probably the largest mobilization in history.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This "detail" went mostly unnoticed among the organizers.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Only after the fact did I comprehend the opportunity missed. The movement was gaining momentum. The people were angry and motivated. And the organizers (I was vaguely involved, but quite non-influential at the time) made them go to some non-confrontational square in a mediatic march, and then sent them home.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://roarmag.org/essays/mayonnaise-effect-gezi-protests/">The mayonnaise</a> was ready, but we were using the wrong recipe. The vision of the leaders (people and organizations) were too narrow compared to the capacity and possibilities history provided them with.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It was a missed revolution. It happened in front of my eyes, and I let it pass by.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">
Gezi</h3>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Then came the Gezi uprising. This is not the place to analyse Turkish politics. All I want to say is that it was very clear for many of us at that point, that pulling Tayyip down was a real possibility. And his fall would be a revolution according to my working definition above.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWzeTvhpbqGS2PUzZ1IBAev5oR0kfNn2O0YGBt063YpODhSpGX_7XfGQk-3F61PBm4DHRMToBZKMROpIsok1EI51zXFlxMWTgjRnfmtmpNJWhB2TaVf7svRYcTdRWalquXlE3pL-GGsfdF/s1600/june11+taksim.Jpeg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="245" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWzeTvhpbqGS2PUzZ1IBAev5oR0kfNn2O0YGBt063YpODhSpGX_7XfGQk-3F61PBm4DHRMToBZKMROpIsok1EI51zXFlxMWTgjRnfmtmpNJWhB2TaVf7svRYcTdRWalquXlE3pL-GGsfdF/s320/june11+taksim.Jpeg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I was involved as much as possible, although almost everyone I met seemed to have felt that they did less than they should have. </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
During the revolt, I had very little idea as to what would bring the movement forward. Some groups simply focused on recruiting, some on propaganda. Many new collectives emerged.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
As many other activists, I had some ideas about what we <i>should have</i> done to be better prepared to Gezi. However, sometimes I ask myself: Are we better prepared <i>now</i> if another uprising were to surge?</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It was a missed revolution. It was in front of my eyes and hands, and I don't think I fulfilled my political responsibilities.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<h3 style="text-align: justify;">
Next?</h3>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
It happens very rarely to someone, to be so close to (you could almost feel the breath) and so much involved in a revolutionary possibility. It happened to me twice, and I failed twice.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
To some extent, <i>we</i> failed twice. But this post is about my personal frustrations with my incapabilities, so I'll keep it within that limit.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The terrorist attacks in the West are escalating. Corporate power is going off the roof. And no one really thinks that refugee flow to safer zones would ever slow down. On top of this come droughts, storms, food and water crises, epidemics - the "usuals" of global climate change.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Ironically, in this period of history when we seem to be marching faster than ever towards barbarism, we are also seeing a series of unprecedented revolutionary possibilities opening up (and then closing).</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Not so many politicians seem to know what should be done. I, for one, have too little ideas in comparison to the challenges we are facing.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But what keeps me awake at nights is this: There will be more social turbulence in the near future, this is a certainty. (These turbulent moments might be for the good or for the bad.) I don't feel that we are collectively prepared to sufficiently address them. And, while trying diverse tools and approaches, I don't yet know how to get ourselves ready for them.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
I would be ultra-lucky to have a third chance. And I would be devastated if I lost it the third time.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
*</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
PS: No political party bankrupted after Gezi, they all claimed their interpretation of the situation was and is the correct one. None shut down saying they failed to seize the moment. Food for thought...</div>

</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Bir klasör dolusu belgeyle geldi, masanın önünde durdu. Başımı kaldırdım hesaplardan, kısa bir süreliğine göz göze geldik. Klasörü masaya koydu. Hiçbir şey söylemeden, önüme aldım dosyayı ve incelemeye başladım.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWCIVSgEFr_xPyrfxbJh7oI_pJfnm7oJZr6P0GW-CVDbf3ONSpRlGdL0gUAf1DbJUxsUoa0kh3uN9LrT7PveVloTYq_LVCrOTpD0WTQy2uLTe-X5OyqTJ89xYeWO8WfUw1g2-AuSc7Wwgd/s1600/vieira-da-silva-1908-e28093-1992-memc3b3ria-segunda-1985.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="236" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhWCIVSgEFr_xPyrfxbJh7oI_pJfnm7oJZr6P0GW-CVDbf3ONSpRlGdL0gUAf1DbJUxsUoa0kh3uN9LrT7PveVloTYq_LVCrOTpD0WTQy2uLTe-X5OyqTJ89xYeWO8WfUw1g2-AuSc7Wwgd/s320/vieira-da-silva-1908-e28093-1992-memc3b3ria-segunda-1985.jpg" width="320" /></a> </div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Saatime baktım, on beş dakika geçmişti. Şimdi tekrar getirdiği dosyaya bakacaktım ki deminki sayfa geçti elime. Korktuğum başıma geldi. Daha beş saniye önce tamamladığım hesaplar, tasnif kaşeli delil sayfasında da aynen belirivermişlerdi.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Gösterdiği raporlarda grafikler vardı, sıcaklık, buzullar ve deniz seviyeleriyle ilgili geçmişten bugüne ve bugünden geleceğe çizilmiş grafikler. Gösterdiği fotoğraflarda seller, evinden olmuş insanlar vardı. Gösterdiği tutanaklarda ise simplektomorfizma grubunun homotopi Lie cebirindeki Samelson çarpımları vardı. Diğer detayları hatırlamıyorum.<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Dışarıdan bir uğultu geliyordu yine.</div>

a socialist, or a communist, or an anti-capitalist, whichever fits
your taste. I fight against the socio-economic system and the
injustices caused by it. I have been following the Unconditional
Basic Income (UBI) discussions for years now. I have four problems
with the proposal and/or how it is presented, which to my knowledge
are not answered yet.
</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDh1UQ_opo-fA2zG5se1n7zWe-sqaH6-YVIUb4mxH0XpTluwbME4RDRs_se-_vpe79W7aiRVNZfagi7Q0aDaT0D_QiLFUFN3TeZCvkwNeszgg5E7v5g70rGvdjit-iGD5eDX_ZiqzouCb6/s1600/basic-income-video.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="180" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhDh1UQ_opo-fA2zG5se1n7zWe-sqaH6-YVIUb4mxH0XpTluwbME4RDRs_se-_vpe79W7aiRVNZfagi7Q0aDaT0D_QiLFUFN3TeZCvkwNeszgg5E7v5g70rGvdjit-iGD5eDX_ZiqzouCb6/s320/basic-income-video.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<h2 class="western">
</h2>
<h2 class="western">
1. Exchange value rather than use value</h2>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
First
is a <b>theoretical</b> problem. It is about the monetarized formulations in
the campaign. We demand free healthcare and education for all. And
UBI campaign tries to enlarge this demand to other basic needs. But
instead of directly demanding housing, food and public transport, it
demands the supposed costs in the form of money.</div>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
The
problem with this approach is that it leaves the decision to the
market. We should never forget that 62 people own more wealth than
half of world population, and that the 1% is richer than the 99%
combined. The ruling class and their choices influence the prices
disproportionately more than us. Anyone who observed the
gentrification process in Bairro Alto or Alfama<a class="sdfootnoteanc" href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=6715262385816429265#sdfootnote1sym" name="sdfootnote1anc">1</a>
knows how that projects onto the right to housing, for instance.</div>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
In
fact, this monetary approach is perfectly compatible with the
capital's commodification motives. We should be demanding food,
housing and public transport for all, independent of their prices.
Introducing the price tag serves <i>per se</i> to amplify the
existing inequalities. Winning right to education is conquering a
fortress, winning UBI is shifting the battle itself into another
fight for what would be the <i>fair</i> basic income, to what products it
would be indexed, and how it would be updated.</div>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
While
UBI advocates like the simplicity of “one measure to solve it all”
motto, unfortunately this is not how reality operates. The simplicity
does help to spread the word and raise awareness, but it also hides
the fact that, in application, all that simplicity will be lost to
market obscurities and neoliberal technocracy.</div>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
A
campaign defensible by anti-capitalists should reject the liberal
discourse, instead of trying to frame its own agenda within it. We
want the basic needs to be <i>outside</i> of the universe of
commodities, and the UBI campaign is pushing to include them within
that universe.</div>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<h2 class="western">
2. A conflict-free proposal</h2>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
My
second problem is an <b>ideological</b> one. It is another simplification
that undermines the UBI campaign, which is the proposal to include
“everyone, without discrimination” in the set of beneficiaries.
This kind of “equality in policy” is what bourgeois philosophy of
law has sold us since the beginning of modernity. These philosophers
tell us that we are all equal in front of law, for instance; but
anyone who ever challenged a company for its misconduct knows
otherwise. The ruling class not only has access to a herd of
sophisticated lawyers, they are also the ones who wrote the laws with
convenient loopholes and wording ambiguities. One could at most say
that the 99% is equal in front of law – well, unless you are a
person of colour, or of an ethnic minority, or of a gender minority,
or very poor, or homeless, or an immigrant, etc. etc. etc.</div>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
There
are no win-win policies in history. And the reason is simple: History
is the history of class struggles. Class struggle exists <i>a priori</i>,
the policy proposal comes on top that fragmentation.</div>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
I
understand that it is a populist approach to propose a simple policy
measure that would benefit everyone. But for this marketing strategy
to work, you should avoid telling what your actual proposal is.
Indeed, the UBI campaign seems to intentionally avoid from putting
content into what the campaign defends. This is also another reason
why political parties with government programs do not adopt the
campaign.<a class="sdfootnoteanc" href="https://www.blogger.com/blogger.g?blogID=6715262385816429265#sdfootnote2sym" name="sdfootnote2anc">2</a></div>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
A
campaign defensible by anti-capitalists should, in one way or
another, choose side in the existing class struggle(s).</div>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<h2 class="western">
3. Who will fight for it?</h2>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
This
brings me to, my third point, a <b>political</b> problem with the campaign.
By avoiding social confrontation and promoting dialogue between
antagonistic political agendas, the UBI campaign fails to define
<i>agency</i>.</div>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
The
campaign discourse is that everyone can be persuaded to the campaign,
therefore everyone should be persuaded to the campaign, and so we
would win. The bad news is that “everyone”, “all of us”, “we”
have no social agency. A social movement can advance only if it
defines a class of people who would naturally benefit from this
struggle.</div>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
By
avoiding such political confrontation, the UBI campaign misses the
chance of mobilizing around this project. This is visible in its way
of organizing as discussion groups rather than a social movement.
</div>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
This
attitude does allow for open debates where people with various
opinions exchange ideas, and I find this quite useful in a world of
social polarization. (Maybe the UBI advocates just wanted to bring
about dialogue and critical thinking to our societies; if so, they
have been doing a wonderful job.) However, as an anti-capitalist, my
priority is to fight the injustices of the current socio-economic
system, in campaigns that we should, can and might win.</div>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<h2 class="western">
4. The prey and the predator allied</h2>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
Related
to this, there is a fourth point, a <b>strategical</b> one. The UBI
proposals have support from various ideological backgrounds, with a
strong presence of liberal economists and intellectuals. The UBI
advocates seem to welcome this diversity, but anti-capitalists should
beware. We shouldn't pretend class struggle does not exist. And the
UBI campaign runs the risk of putting the sheep and the wolf under
the same roof.</div>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
I
have respect to highly-educated bourgeois intellectuals and their
talent and tradition to draw lessons from history. I believe that
they see what I see in this campaign, and most probably more: an
opportunity for accumulation and centralization of the capital. And I
believe that this is why they are there. Of course, as any rational
wolf would do, they do not raise their voice against us but rather
use the pretext of win-win solutions as ground for persuasion. There
is no persuasion or collaboration of wolves and sheep.</div>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
The
UBI campaign <i>proposes a form without specifying its content</i>,
thereby allowing diverse opinions to encounter in a common platform.
For common people, this is quite useful exercise. But when
ideologists of the ruling class come in, it turns into a different
story, at least for anti-capitalist militants.</div>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<h2 class="western">
Building traps for one's self</h2>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
In
conclusion, the strategy of the Universal Basic Income advocates to
present the campaign as conflict-free and widely inclusive brings
about a serious of weaknesses for the campaign. These weaknesses may,
in the worst case,open space to swaying towards neoliberal politics,
or, in the best case, produce a non-winnable campaign. I see very
little space for an anti-capitalist movement at any point in this
spectrum.</div>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
Most
UBI activists seem to share, implicitly, a set of values such as
justice and equity, with which I agree. They also seem to share a
common apologetic attitude towards the world they imagine, with that
I disagree. I believe it is crucial to openly declare what we want
rather than focusing on having faith on tricks in communication
strategies, because victory doesn't come without conviction and
honesty.</div>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div align="justify" style="line-height: 100%; margin-bottom: 0in;">
<br /></div>

Portugal, only PAN and Livre support the campaign openly. Not
accidentally, both parties have more of a philosophical wishful

nowadays those approaches are more necessary than power-focused
programs. However, one cannot win a fight without a political

In June elections, HDP passed the 10% legal threshold and therefore AKP lost majority.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
AKP (government) 40% - 258 seats</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
CHP (social democrats) 25% - 132 seats</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
MHP (nationalists) 16% - 80 seats</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
HDP (Kurdish-socialist alliance) 13% - 80 seats</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
President Tayyip, still the background leader of AKP, first gave the government responsibility to AKP leader Ahmet (a.k.a. the squirrel man), who killed all his legally allowed time in futile negotiations.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSSQAm5Muk3HzkeRiRRmS1mzUaizHIeP4zxKAEAEoxBgvdAdbWpLwIVaBcEn5uw3EUerjuDzYhnKQyN6dQqn-re0O9-TB2Uyt9FwaItt4wAXpbPKBde5yMNtvTH_CAdhi4odZMvRjoK9NV/s1600/tayyip.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="172" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiSSQAm5Muk3HzkeRiRRmS1mzUaizHIeP4zxKAEAEoxBgvdAdbWpLwIVaBcEn5uw3EUerjuDzYhnKQyN6dQqn-re0O9-TB2Uyt9FwaItt4wAXpbPKBde5yMNtvTH_CAdhi4odZMvRjoK9NV/s320/tayyip.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
Then, Tayyip refused to give the 60% a chance, and instead organized the Suruç massacre that not only killed some of the most beautiful 35 people in the world but also started a civil war between the Turkish state and the Kurdish movement, breaking with the years-long cease-fire. (This civil war later included the Ankara massacre, the single most violent attack in Turkish history.)</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Tayyip called for early elections on November 1st - his legal “right” as a president, mind you. Several fine-tuning and rearrangement strategies were used to give the “right” results:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<ul style="text-align: justify;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXViPu3m3JhqjGkyPvsbRl7iJhSspkwNrowFQS8Mue7uqMX72F6ctIBGtjD747gE8emcyGmYRrAT-5UoU0Oc3Uz3l_DVJwK-ma-8Cd2wjhxspAZmp5cO_OuZcDJW-8M7MhPtxy67gQS1P7/s1600/voting+in+kurdistan.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="205" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhXViPu3m3JhqjGkyPvsbRl7iJhSspkwNrowFQS8Mue7uqMX72F6ctIBGtjD747gE8emcyGmYRrAT-5UoU0Oc3Uz3l_DVJwK-ma-8Cd2wjhxspAZmp5cO_OuZcDJW-8M7MhPtxy67gQS1P7/s320/voting+in+kurdistan.jpg" width="320" /></a>
<li>Civil war fed nationalist hysteria, moving votes from MHP to AKP in an attempt to secure single-party government fighting against terrorism.</li>
<li>It also allowed extra-ordinary measures to be taken in the Kurdish cities, shuffling voting zones and ballot boxes, together with strong police presence during the elections. </li>
</ul>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
The preliminary results:</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
AKP 49% ~ 315 seats</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
CHP 25% ~ 135 seats</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
MHP 12% ~ 40 seats</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
HDP 10% ~ 60 seats</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
This gives AKP a majority government.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Tayyip did not follow the constitution or law. <b>He followed his class interest above all, never let his power put in question, reconsidered his strategy (not his objectives nor his legitimacy), and advanced.</b> He has the power, so he had all the space for maneuvering around the voting system.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWpoexi-MQMk3RqPa9-SjBuokQbVqaL9TtFT-4z5oH87uuByBOpWFiGq3YdboCkaMI5Ylth_s3FccS73E6CFITRgfqytwVok79FtWE4Qd03HRHBXHYjEE3CmPLtaF5ZOGPOBbGD6PSKOHT/s1600/hdp+talking.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="167" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjWpoexi-MQMk3RqPa9-SjBuokQbVqaL9TtFT-4z5oH87uuByBOpWFiGq3YdboCkaMI5Ylth_s3FccS73E6CFITRgfqytwVok79FtWE4Qd03HRHBXHYjEE3CmPLtaF5ZOGPOBbGD6PSKOHT/s320/hdp+talking.jpg" width="320" /></a>We did our best but, under direct attack, we failed to prevent this large scale manipulation and cheating campaign.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Coming back to Portugal, three weeks ago, the right-wing coalition lost majority. After long negotiations, Cavaco gave the responsibility of forming government to Steps Rabbit, although he didn't seem to have a chance at the time. Many commentators discuss whether this was a coup or not, how Cavaco should have acted etc.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Cavaco knows what is in favor of his class interest, and he is following it. He will never be bothered by the constitution and such.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
To be clear: PaF needs time, not in order to open civil war as in Turkey, but in order to produce an anti-communist hysteria within PS to make them surrender. Cavaco had the power to give them that time, so he did.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Those whose analyses are trapped inside bourgeois legality will never understand the class character of Cavaco's move.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
But we have this burning example in front of us, an example of urgent left-wing strategy failed, from which we can try to learn what to do now: What to do instead of waiting for them to run their strategy until their victory.</div>

PS: If Turkish politics is too complicated for you to catch the context, read about the 1917 Revolution. Read “Ten Days That Shook The World” to see how same legal tricks were used to avoid radical change in the society. (Well, in this case, it will not be an example of failed strategy though.)</div>

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Herkes panik içinde odaya doluşuyor.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Sen, o doğumu yürüten doktorsun. Her kafadan bir ses çıkıyor, ayılanlar bayılanlar, bağırıp çağıranlar... Evet, doğum zorlu geçiyor, eski yeniye direniyor.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
*</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
- Sen!
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
- Sen! Evet biliyorum kan gölü oldu ortalık. Sezaryenle doğum yapıyoruz, grip aşısı değil. Git havlu getir, temiz su getir.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
- Sen! Git sigaranı dışarıda iç.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
- Sen!
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
- Sen! Yahu kardeşim böyle ameliyatın videosu mu olurmuş?! Atın şu herifi dışarı!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
- Hemşire! Ne konuşup duruyorsun orada? Neymiş efendim, hiç böyle belalı bir ameliyat görmemişlermiş! Lafa bak! Git yeni eldiven ve neşter getir bana. Şu kadına da sakinleştirici iğne yapın biriniz gevezelik edeceğinize!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
- Sen! Gözünü şu ekrana dik bak bakalım göstergeler normal mi gidiyor!</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Bu bir seçenek.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
*</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
İkinci bir seçeneğin de var.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEht5wSlo4Q3H_o8IYrxr8tKtUHpJOiAWoZzYNbB94Ly1Fwx98EWX0nnxmIsH74ecN_t_BRsnEglkMK76xZgMJAhVp3dVM4B7sXuJ1omq5eDGkVG3UnggdxUjJ46lXbeEr0k800w6OO9ihKT/s1600/confusion.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="clear: right; float: right; margin-bottom: 1em; margin-left: 1em;"><img border="0" height="294" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEht5wSlo4Q3H_o8IYrxr8tKtUHpJOiAWoZzYNbB94Ly1Fwx98EWX0nnxmIsH74ecN_t_BRsnEglkMK76xZgMJAhVp3dVM4B7sXuJ1omq5eDGkVG3UnggdxUjJ46lXbeEr0k800w6OO9ihKT/s320/confusion.jpg" width="320" /></a></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
- Evet lanet olsun kadının çok canı yanıyor, kanama almış başını gitmiş, tüm aile başıma üşüşmüş, hemşireler panik halinde. Yok hocam ben bunu yapamıyorum, olmaz bu iş.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: center;">
**</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Tayyip ülkeyi göz göre göre <i>kendi düşüşü</i> ile <i>toplumsal çürüme</i> arasında bir seçime kıstırmaya çalışıyor. Ama Tayyip'in vadesi gelmiştir. Buradan Tayyip'in çıkarına uygun bir çıkış yok.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Geliyoruz. Toplumsal barış ve adalet için geliyoruz. Emin adımlarla.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">

<div style="text-align: justify;">
Şunları tekrar tekrar hatırlatmalı önümüzdeki aylarda.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
- Adıyaman raporları: HDP'nin Diyarbakır mitingine düzenlenen bombalı saldırıda MİT'in kilit rolü hakkında gırla somut kanıt var.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
- Suruç katliamı: IŞİD bu saldırıyı üstlenmedi.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
- AKP'nin yeni savaş tezkeresi: Bu tezkere, eğer seçim anketleri böyle giderse, işlerine gelmediği noktada seçimleri erteleme bahanesi olacak. CHP ve MHP buna aktif destek verdi.</div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br />
<div style="text-align: justify;">
<br /></div>
<div style="text-align: justify;">
Tekrar: <b>Sabır, soğukkanlılık, kararlılık</b>.</div>
